Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 15th December 1916, Sergeant Joseph Raymond Veitch, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1258), clerk (Public Works Department), from 102 Wolfe Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Armentieres, France, age 19 years 3 months. Cause of death unknown.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Parramatta, New South Wales on the 2nd September 1897 to Thomas (died 8.6.1916, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 58) of 102 Wolfe Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 91 Lindsay Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., and Eliza Veitch (died 25.11.1935, Parramatta, N.S.W., age 77, sleeping at Rookwood Cemetery) of Mogo Creek, St. Albans, via Hawkesbury, New South Wales (1917), Joe enlisted on the 16th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Mr. Veitch is resting at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. Plot IV Row B Grave 4.

Place of Association – Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Joe’s name has been inscribed on the Gardner Memorial and the Book of Gold. Name not inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription on the headstone plaque for father Thomas to tell us of the loss of his son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Joe’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-60. 31.
