Walter was the third of fourteen children of Trevillian (Walter) Henry Griffin (b1877 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Ada Frances Towton (b1889 in Perth WA). Walter Snr had moved from Victoria to WA with his parents and siblings in the early 1880s and in the early 1900s worked as a Horse Trainer in Kalgoorlie. Ada's father was well known WA Horse Breeder, Jockey, and Trainer in Belmont, Perth WA. Walter Snr (a Horse Trainer in Belmont, Perth WA) and Ada married in 1906 in Perth WA where they settled and raised their family. Walter Snr died in 1940.

Walter worked as a Labourer in the Bellevue and Rivervale suburbs in Perth, and in 1939 married Elsie May Hoddy (b1921 in Fremantle WA). In1942 Walter was a Cement Worker/Truck Driver when he enlisted in the ACMF (Sapper; Service No:W21598). He was attached to 22 Field Coy when he Discharged in March 1943 to enlist in the AIF. Walter served in Morotai and Borneo (11 April 1945 - 3 December 1945) as a Sapper with 2 Australian Port Construction Coy RAE. He was Discharged in January 1946.

Returning to Perth WA, Walter and Elsie were Divorced in 1946. Walter lived in Rivervale, Perth WA with his mother and brother and was a Process Worker. By 1971 Walter was an Assembler living in Rivervale WA when he married Valma Joyce Carol Raisbeck (nee Hurley; b1933 in Kalgoorlei WA). By 1977 Walter had retired and he and Valma lived in Kwinana before moving to Northam in 1980. Walter died in 1992 and Valma in 2009.
