Signalman Sarah Dorothy Coles (Nee Winnett; Service No:WF45868) enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service on 9 August 1942 and served with 96 Australian Wireless Section and 56 Australian Wireless Section. Signalman Coles was attached to 2 Australian Signals Training Battalion when she was Discharged on 9 November 1945. 

Born in 1917 in Fremantle WA, Sarah was the eldest of seven children of John Mayberry Winnett (b1892 in Clunes, Victoria) and Sarah (Sadie) Marian Hicks (b1895 in Fremantle WA. John (a Clerk) and Sadie married in 1916 in Fremantle WA - the month John embarked for service in WWI (Private; Service No:3225). John and Sadie lived in Fremantle and Perth where they raised their family and John was a Clerk. Following his service in WWII, he and Sadie settled in Albany WA where John was Assistant Town Clerk.

Sarah was a Dressmaker in Perth WA when she enlisted in the AWAS, and in 1943 married John Richard Coles (b1924 in Pakistan) - John was a Private (Service No:WX38443) with 5 Australian Light Field Ambulance. Sarah and John settled in Albany WA following their Discharges, and John worked as a Shop Assistant and Railways Employee. John died in 1985 and Sarah in 2000.
