In the neighbourhood of Peronne, principally on the Somme Canal and River, this Sapper carried despatches continuously under machine gun fire and shell fire on the days and nights of August 30th, 31st, September 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Journeying from points 300 to 500 yards in advance of our posts to Brigade Headquarters, with reports on progress of foot-bridging over the Somme Valley. His fortitude, perseverance, gallantry and devotion to duty have been most marked. Son of Elizabeth Esther Simmons of Adelaide, SA. Brother of Alfred John Simmons of Port Lincoln, SA and later given as next of kin, Esther May Simmons and Alexander Roy Simmons.
