Thomas Francis “Leo” Maher was born the 28th of May 1908 at Deniliquin, New South Wales; the second child and only son of Laurence Leo Maher and Mary Jane Gregg. His older sister was Mary Veronica Maher, also of Deniliquin.
Little is known of his early life in Deniliquin. He was a student at St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Deniliquin and at Christian Brothers College in South Melbourne.
After reaching adult age Leo was employed as a shearing shed labourer with O.J. Smith Company.
Leo worked in multiple locations including Hay, New South Wales and in the western district of Victoria.
When World War Two started Leo was still working as a labourer as listed on his attestation form.
Leo enlisted with 2AIF the 16th of April 1940 and served until the war ended, his service finishing the 21st of November 1945. Ranks held by Leo during the war were Signalman and Lance Corporal.
During World War Two, Leo saw action at Tobruk (Operation Compass), Greece (Greek Campaign), Syria, Sarawak and Tarakan.
Post World War Two, Leo settled in to living at North Melbourne, Victoria with wife Mollie née Kavanagh whom he married in 1943 at St Mary’s Church, Malvern, Victoria.
Leo and Mollie had one son. They lived at multiple locations in Melbourne including Chelsea, Richmond and Box Hill.
Leo spent his post-war years as a Bookkeeper and Stamp Trader.
He died in 1994 at Heidelberg aged 86.
