Burtie Machell (otherwise known as Bertie Machell) was born in Georgetown, South Australia in 1893 to Mrs Sarah Machell, his mother, who was listed as his next of kin. On the 2nd of March 1916 at age 22, Burtie enlisted into the infantry, later embarking from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A70 Ballarat and safely returning with no life-threatening injuries on 12 December 1918.
Prior to enlistment Burtie Machell worked as a farmer, living in Brinkwork, South Australia, and belonged to the Church of England. He also had previous experience in the Australian Imperial Force, having served 11 months in the Light Horse Regiment. His last rank was Private and his last unit was 2nd depot battalion A.I.F..
He was wounded at Ypres on 30 September 1917 and again on 24 June 1918.
He unfortunately passed away in 1955 and has a memorial that resides in Hammond, Mount Remarkable, South Australia, Australia.
