Morton was a Japanese prisoner of war [POW] between March 1942 and September 1945. He was captured in Malaya (Malaysia) and was held in POW camp in Manchuria (now Shenyang Province, PRC) for most of this time.

The camp was liberated in August 1945, by Soviet troops (262nd Rifle Division, 113th Infantry Corps, 39th army) and a small OSS team [this paragraph: source Wikipedia].
