Daughter of Charles STAPLETON, Post Office, Glen Innes, New South Wales.
Marjorie, who was born in Glen Innes, NSW, is a veteran of the Second World War.
Before her war service, she worked as a machinist dressmaker. In November 1943, Marjorie enlisted in the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS). After her recruit training, in January 1944 she was posted to 1 Australian Returned Stores Depot at Rosebery, Sydney, where she served as a storekeeper. The depot was responsible for receiving previously issued and used equipment from military units to then be sorted, assessed, and if possible cleaned and repaired to be returned to stores for re-issuing.
During the war, Marjorie met her future husband, Private John ‘Jack’ Bradford, when at a dance at the Marrickville Town Hall. The couple married while still serving, and Marjorie was discharged in July 1945 having served for 597 days. With the war very nearly over, Majorie had made her contribution and was able to be discharged at her own request. The couple went on to have one son, who has sadly died.
Marjorie and Jack have also been blessed with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jack sadly passed away in 2014.
After raising her son, Marjorie worked as a lab assistant at the University of New South Wales. She liked gardening and played tennis and lawn bowls in her spare time. She also enjoyed all sorts of crafts, especially knitting and embroidery. She still keeps busy with some crafts now.
Marjorie’s secret to her long life is having plenty of fresh fruit and veggies and a glass of chardonnay every day.
