Eldest of the the three brothers (Fred and Clarrie) who served in WWII, Sergeant Norman William LeLay (Service Nos:N77714/NX176166) initially served in the Militia (Private, Transport Corporal; Service No:425761) with 20/54 Battalion (12 August 1936 - 24 May 1940). Corporal LeLay then served in the ACMF (30 July 1940 - 27 October 1943) with 4 Auxiliary HT Coy and 5 Pack Transport Coy before enlisting in the AIF on 28 October 1943) - posted to 3 Water Transport Coy. Sergeant (Coxswain) LeLay served with 13 and 16 Small Ship Coys in New Guinea (12 January 1945 - 28 January 1946), and was attached to 16 Small Ship Coy at Discharge on 15 February 1946.
Norman was born in Nyngan, New South Wales in 1910, second (and eldest surviving) of four children (sons) of William Thomas LeLay (b1878 in Hartley via Lithgow, New South Wales) and Edith Emma Lucas (b1883 in Bourke, New South Wales). William worked on the Railways as a Ganger and Fettler, and following their marriege in Sydney in 1904, he and Edith lived in Nyngan, Brewarrina, Peak Hill and Trewilga via Parkes. William was a member of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows.
Norman worked in Orange as a Labourer and Blacksmith, and in 1934 in Orange married Ruby Mary Woodbridge (b1908 in Orange, New South Wales). Norman and Ruby lived in Orange - Norman returned to Orange following his Discharge. By 1947 he and Ruby had moved to Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family. Norman died in 1968 and Ruby in 2003.
