Oddly, Sydney Roy Mackereth is not listed in the South Australian Births
Register. He left Melbourne on HMAT A60 Aeneas on 30 October 1917,
arriving at Dover, England on 27 December, where, after further training he
was sent to France with his unit on 1 April 1918. Sydney spent a week in July
in hospital receiving treatment for a neck boil, shortly after which he was
killed in action on 24 July. He was buried at La Krenle British Cemetery near
Hazebrouk. A photo of his grave site was sent to his father on 27 February
1921 and he received a Memorial Plaque on behalf of his son on 13 November
1922.
The Register of Friday 30 August 1918 carried the following death notice titled
: Late Pte S.R. Mackereth - “News was received at Templers on Tuesday that

Pte. S.R. Mackereth, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Mackereth, was killed in
action on July 24.
The deceased soldier enlisted with his brother Pte. H.L. Mackereth in July
1917, and sailed for the front three months later. He went into action in May
1918. Pte. Mackereth was 22 years of age and had lived at Templers all his
life. A brother, Lance Corporal H.T. Mackereth, has been serving with the
forces in Egypt since May 1915.”
