William Martin MOORE (Service Number 1945) was born in Crookwell about 1898l Hejoined the Railways as a 16½-year-old ‘shop boy’ at Goulburn locomotive depot in 1914. He was promoted to cleaner (first step on the career path to engine driver).

He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces in January 1916, and a few days later he enlisted at Goulburn in the AIF.  His father’s consent was given. This was required because he was still only 18½.
