Biography

Charles Percy Taylor (1341)

Charles was born on 10th. July 1889 in Newtown, NSW to John Thomas Taylor and Caroline Williams. He served 3 years in the 13/2 (Queensland Mounted Infantry) Australian Light Horse prior to the war. He was a builder by trade when he enlisted at Liverpool on 1st. July 1915 into the 1st. Light Horse Brigade 10th. Reinforcements as a Private. He made a good beginning to his career by being AWOL for 10 hours on 12th. October 1915  the day the Unit departed Sydney aboard the HMAT A4 Pera bound for Egypt. For that he received a  severe reprimand.

The Australian Light Horse Brigade were based in Cairo and from there he proceeded to join the Western Front Force on 14.1.1916 .  He spent 7 days in July with the MVS at Kantara which is the corps  responsible for the medical care of animals used by the army; predominantly horses, mules and pigeons

Towards the end of April 1917 ill health forced him to spend 2 months being transferred between hospitals. Upon discharge from 14thAGH at Cairo he was sent to the hospital at Montazah before rejoining his regiment at Moascar on 22nd. June 1917. On the 21st. September 1917 he was once again sent to hospital for 9 days and discharged 30 September. The following year he was in a detail sent to the cookery school  on 8th. July  but ill health sent him to hospital for a month. He then convalesced in the rest camp at Port Said on the coast for two weeks before rejoining his unit on the 31st. August 1918.

On the 11th. November 1918 the armistice was signed for the cessation of hostilities in Western Europe that comprised the First World War with the ceasefire coming into effect from 1100 hours.

Charles returned to Australia aboard the Ulimaroa on the 13 March 1919 and received his official discharge on 23rd. June 1919.

For his part in the war effort he received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and the 1914/45 Star

On 14th. July 1976 he passed away in New South Wales.
