Arthur enlisted on the 17 August 1914, one of the very earliest enlistments in the AIF. He assigned to the 5th Battalion and left Australia with the first contingent in October 1914. He was at the Landing on Gallipoli and served through the entire campaign without getting wounded or falling sick, a rare achievement in itself. He landed back in Egypt in early January 1916 after the general evacuation. Arthur was transferred to the Imperial School of Instruction during early 1916 and promoted to Corporal.
Arthur also underwent 2 periods of service in the RAAF during WW2, as a Sergeant, and worked in aerodrome control in New Guinea. He served for another five years in total and was discharged from the Laverton Base in 1946.
