Born in Myanmar in 1913, Matthew was the fourth of seven children of James Horatio Utting (b1880 in Yorkshire, England) and Elna Haswell (b1886 in Myanmar). James (a Master Mariner and River Pilot) and Elna married in Rangoon, Burma in 1908, and raised their family in Myanmar. Matthew completed a Bachelor of Engineering like his older brother James and in 1940 in Perth WA he married Gladys (Doddie) Emily Brooking (b1917 in Perth WA). Matthew and Gladys moved to Launceston, Tasmania where Matthew was working as a Civil Engineer in May 1943 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Lieutenant; Service No:TX9083).
