Born in Myanmar in 1913, Matthew was the fourth of seven children of James Horatio Utting (b1880 in Yorkshire, England) and Elna Haswell (b1886 in Myanmar). James (a Master Mariner and River Pilot) and Elna married in Rangoon, Burma in 1908, and raised their family in Myanmar. In 1936 the family arrived in Fremantle WA on board the Narkunda and settled in Fremantle WA. James and his five sons all served in WWII - Richard and Peter were KiA.
Matthew completed a Bachelor of Engineering like his older brother James and in 1940 in Perth WA he married Gladys (Doddie) Emily Brooking (b1917 in Perth WA). Matthew and Gladys moved to Launceston, Tasmania where Matthew was working as a Civil Engineer in May 1943 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Lieutenant; Service No:TX9083). Matthew served with RAETC in Wagga (1943) and 66 Australian DCRE (Works) in 1944 before posting to 13 Australian Small Ships Coy. He served in New Guinea (5 May 1945 - 10 February 1946) and was attached to 16 Small Ships Coy when he was Discharged in March 1946.
Returning to Cottesloe, Fremantle WA Matthew worked as a Civil Engineer. He died in 2001 and Gladys in 2002.
