The second of five children, Alan was born in Orange NSW in 1920. His parents - William Bartlett (b1887 in Bathurst NSW) and Ellen Betsy Hughes (b1892 in Yass NSW) married in 1916 in Sydney NSW and moved to Orange NSW where they raised their family. William was a Plasterer, and following Ellen's death in 1946, he moved to Cronulla NSW.

Alan served in the Australian Army (Private; Service Nos:NX165406/N33122/NX149779) from 1942 to 1946 and was posted in Noonamah NT when he joined the AIF. He was attached to 13 Australian Small Ships Coy when he Discharged in 1946.

Returning to Orange NSW, Alan was working as a Carpenter in 1947 when he married Eileen Mary Queripel (b1925 in Sydney NSW). In the early 1950s the couple moved to Wynnum, QLD where Alan worked as a Carpenter. He died in 2012 and Eileen in 2016.
