Signalman Aubrey Trevor Payne (Service No:WX3640) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:248193) from 6 December 1929 to 1 October 1934 with 13th Field Ambulance. He then enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:247672) from 8 November 1939 to 27 May 1940 with 13 Mixed Brigade. On 28 May 1940 he enlisted in the AIF and served as a Signalman with 7 Division Signals in the Middled East (25 October 1940 - 24 March 1942), in New Guinea (14 November 1942 - 28 October 1943); Darwin (22 June 1944 - 14 September 1944) and NEI/Balikappan (6 June 1945 - 13 November 1945). Signalman Payne was attached to 2/2 Australian Tank Attack Regiment Signals Division when he was Discharged on 23 November 1945.
Born in 1911 in London England, Aubrey was the youngest of four children (sons) of William James Payne (b1880 in Hackney, London) and Letitia (Annie) Theobld (b1880 in Oxton, England). William (a Builder/Carpenter) and Annie married in London in 1905 and immigrated with their four sons to Fremantle WA on board the Otranto in 1911. The family settled in Leederville, Perth WA where William was a Builder/Carpenter.
Aubrey started work as a Tailor before becoming a Carpenter. In 1948 in Perth, Aubrey married Esma Lloyd Parncutt (b1908 in Perth, WA) - Esma was working as a Clerk in Subiaco. Aubrey and Esma settled at Balcatta where Aubrey worked as a Carpenter before retiring to Rockingham in the late 1970s. Esma died in 1989 and Aubrey in 2002.
