Gunner Roy Charles Austin (Service No:TX6871) enlisted in the Australian Army on 22 February 1942 - in his Attestation Papers he stated that he had previously served as a Trooper (Service No:T42545) with 22 Light Horse. Gunner Austin served with 55 Anti Aircraft Regiment (Composite) as a Private and was attached to 116 Tank Attack Regiment when he was Discharged on 5 May 1944.

Roy was born in 1911 at Scottsdale in Tasmania, the fourth of six children of George (Bill) Alfred Austin (b1879 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Clara Elizabeth Carey (b1881 at Ringarooma in Victoria). Bill (a Labourer) and Clara married in 1906 in Scottsdale, Tasmania where they settled and raised their family and Bill worked as a Labourer.

Roy lived and worked in Scottsdale all his life - a Labourer before he served in WWII, and later as a Saw Mill Hand. In 1959 at Scottsdale in Tasmania, Roy married Jean Marie Fink (nee Stebbings; b1920 at Illawarra in Tasmania). Roy and Jean lived in Scottsdale and Ringarooma where Roy worked as a Mill Hand. Roy died in 1975 and Jean in 2001.
