Albert left Australia and proceeded to Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt where he served from 29 February 1916 until 11 March, prior to leaving Alexandria for Marsailles on the Arcadia on 5 June. He was killed in action in France on 27 September. Albert was initially buried at Aeroplane Military Cemetery but later re-buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery near Ypres. His Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll and King’s Message were sent to his father in 1921, with photographed copies of the memorial cross erected to the memory of Albert Thiele being sent to his mother on 10 February 1921. She received a pension of one pound and ten shillings per fortnight as from 16 December 1917.
A “Family Notice” in The Advertiser of Saturday 20 October 1917 stated that “Driver Albert H. Thiele was killed in action somewhere in France 27 September 1917.”

Biography

"FOR KING AND COUNTRY.

Private A. H. (Albert Thiele), son of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Thiele, of Oakbank, was killed in action on September 27, 1917. The deceased soldier was in his 25th year. Prior to enlistment he was employed by Mr. E. Marks, of Oakbank. The late Pte. Thiele was a fine athlete and was a member of the Onkaparinga Football Club, the rifle and cricket club. He was associated with the Woodside Band and the Loyal Onkaparinga Lodge. A brother (Pte.
