Ivan was the seventh of twelve children of Charles Jesse Bishop (b1869 in Northam, WA) and Hannah Burton (b1875 in York, WA). Charles (a Labourer) and Hannah married in 1892 in York, WA where they settled and raised their family. Charles worked on construction of the railway line from Clackline to Spencer's Creek and later took up farming in Qualen and Greenhills.

Ivan worked as a Railway Repairer and in 1925 married Ivy Cross (b1905 in Lancashire). Ivy arrived with her parents in Fremantle WA in 1911 on board the Belgic. Ivan and Ivy lived in Toodyay where Ivan worked on the Railways until enlisting in the Australian Army in May 1940. He was a Private (Service No:WX3172) attached to 1 Aust Tk W/Shop Coy when he was Discharged in February 1944.

Ivan and Ivy were living in Collie, WA in 1949 and Ivan was a Blacksmith. In the early 1950s the family moved to Perth, where Ivan continued to work as a Blacksmith. He died in 1979 and Ivy in 1990.
