Son of Peter Semmens and Elizabeth Jane Semmens nee Stephens of Brunswick, Victoria. At the time of enlisting Richard was employed with Brunswick Tent of Albert Street, East Brunswick.

Husband of Linda Annie Beatrice Semmens nee Ellis of Nellie Street, Beechworth, Victoria. Richard and Linda married in Victoria during 1911c
