Biography contributed by Ian Fox

During WW1, James Dean enlisted in the AIF on the 21 August 1916, and on 20 October 1916 he embarked from Australia for England via Sierra Leone. He disembarked at Plymouth on 9 January 1917 and by late April-early 1917 James was 'taken on strength' in France. He was accidentally wounded in October, was awarded the Military Medal in May-June 1918 [for gallantry and conspicuous devotion to duty], was wounded [gassed] in late August 1918, spent a number of months in hospitals in France and then England, and never returned to the front.

James was demobilised and left England in late September 1919, and arrived in Melbourne in mid November 1919. [Service number 2300]

James was a boot maker for his entire working life, and during WW2 he was running a business in Birregurra, (his permanent address was Drumcondra, Geelong). He enlisted in the 19th (VIC) Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) where he was appointed to acting sergeant in August 1942 [service number V352284].
