Bombardier John Stephen Anthony Dare (Service No:NX91210) initially served in the Militia as a Private (Service No:430517) with 34th Battalion from 11 May 1939 to 21 October 1939, and enlisted in the AIF on 4 March 1944 as a Private attached to General Details Depot and 8 Training Battalion. Promoted to Bombardier on 28 February 1943, he was attached to 104 Tank Attack Regiment at Discharge on 8 October 1944 (required for employment in an essential occupation).
Steve was born in London, England in 1909, eldest of two children of John Nelson Hardy (b1869 in London, England) and Ada Amelia Augusta Cherry (b1886 in London, England). John and Ada married in 1908 in London - John was a Pianoforte Tuner. In 1911 John and Ada immigrated, arriving in Sydney with their son on board the Medic. Following John's death in 1917, Ada remarried to Ernest Alfred Dare, and lived in Sydney, Bega, Goulburn and Woolongong. Alfred was an Engineer, Dairy Expert and Butter Factory Manager.
Steve was a Butter Maker in 1933 in Kiama when he married Beryl (Bebe) Alexander (b1905 in Jamberoo, New South Wales). Steve and Bebe settled in Jamberoo via Kiama, where they raised their family and Steve was a Butter Manufacturer. Bebe died in 1978 and Steve in 1997.
