Son of Roger Hope Edward Upton and Margaret Emma Upton of 'Maranoa', Scone, NSW.
5 October 1915 - enlisted at Liverpool NSW, with the 1st Light Horse Regiment and with the rank of Private.
15 February 1917 - promoted to Lance Corporal
5 November 1917 - promoted to 2nd Lieutenant
9 February 1918 - promoted to Lieutenant
14 July 1918 - wounded but remained on duty
19 April 1919 - returned to Australia aboard HT Ulimaroa
Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal
16 June 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District
During 1925c Charles married Rita L.M. Campbell in NSW.
