Sapper Albert Arthur Atwell (Service Nos:VX140512/V2225544) initially served in the ACMF from 9 March 1942 to 18 May 1943 and was in Darwin NT with 23rd/21st Infantry Battalion (9 May 1942 - 28 January 1943). Sapper Atwell was at Kapooka on 19 May 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF, serving with 9 Australian Workshop and Park Coy RAE in New Guinea (6 July 1943 - 4 September 1944) and Morotai (4 May 1945 - 22 January 1946). Sapper Atwell was attached to 9 Australian Workshop and Park Coy RAE at Discharge on 11 June 1946. He was one of six brothers (Maurice, Cliff, Harold, Walter and Cyril) who served in WWII.
Born in Rainbow, Victoria in 1921, Albert was eighth of twelve children of George Alfred Atwell (b1884 in Templars, South Australia) and Amy Eleanor Rogers (b1888 in East Cannum, Victoria). George (a Farmer) and Amy married in 1909 in Rainbow, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and George was a Farmer.
Albert worked in Raibow as a Farm Labourer before enlisting in the Army and following his Discharge was a Labourer in Rainbow in 1946 when he married Alison Jean Christian (b1925 in Rainbow, Victoria). By 1949 Albert was a Farmer and he and Alison lived at Kennedy's Creek in Port Campbell, Heldentenor, Lake Charm nr Hopetoun and Swift's Creek in Omeo. In 1980 they were living in Bruthen in Gippsland where Albert was a Labourer before retiring to Camperdown. Alison died in 2009 and Albert in 2022.
