Son of William Semmens and Katie Semmens nee Lawry of Iris Road, Hawthorn, Victoria. Brother of Archie Semmens who returned to Australia on 29 December  1918 having served with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade  and Phillip Grenfell Semmens

Husband of Florence Elizabeth Semmens nee  Hall of Iris Road, Hawthorn, Victoria. Joseph and Florence married in Victoria during 1913c

Commenced return to Australia on 12 April 1919 aboard HT Suffolk disembarking on the 5 June 1919
