Sapper Walter Keith Atwell (Service Nos:VX130879/V22552) initially served in the ACMF (9 March 1942 - 22 May 1943) with 4 Infantry Training Battalion, 23/21 Infantry Battalion and 9 Australian Workshop and Park Coy RAE. Sapper Atwell was in Darwin NT with 9 Australian Workshop and Park Coy from 9 May 1942 to 28 January 1943. On 23 May 1943 he enlisted in the AIF, serving with 9 Australian Workshop and Park Coy RAE in New Guinea (6 July 1943 - 4 September 1944) and Morotai (4 May 1945 - 9 May 1946). Sapper Atwell was attached to 9 Workshop and Park Coy RAE at Discharge on 21 August 1946. Walter was one of six siblings (Maurice, Cliff, Harold, Albert and Cyril) who served in WWII.

Born in Rainbow, Victoria in 1923, Walter was ninth of twelve children of George Albert Atwell (b1884 in Templars, South Australia) and Amy Eleanor Rogers (b1888 in East Cannum, Victoria). George (a Farmer) and Amy married in 1909 in Rainbow where they settled and raised their family and George was a Farmer.

Walter was working in Rainbow as a Farm Labourer when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, he returned, and in 1947 married Heather Burnett Christian (b1926 in Rainbow, Victoria). Walter and Heather lived in Mildura where Walter was a Labourer, before settling in Derrinallum where they raised their family and Walter was a Farmer. Heather died in 2009 and Walter in 2012.
