Private Vernon Lancelot Fairhall (Service No:VX128056) initially served in the Militia as a Trooper (Service No:96740) with 17th Machine Gun Regiment from 9 February 1939 to 15 December 1941. On 16 December 1941 he enlisted in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:V280230) and served at No 5 CCS Balcombe before enlisting in the AIF on 3 January 1944. Private Fairhall served on Hospital Ship HMAS Wanganella, carrying wounded and sick evacuees from Port Moresby to Australia, and with 101 Australian General Hospital (AGH). On 18 May 1945 Private Fairhall transferred to 7 Australian Watercraft Workshop Section AEME and served in New Guinea from 16 June 1945 to 4 February 1946. Private Fairhall was attached to 7 Australian Watercraft Workshop Section at Discharge on 19 March 1946.

Born at Glendaruel nr Ballarat, Victoria in 1915, Vernon was youngest of seven children of John Apted Fairhall (b1864 at Dean's Marsh, Victoria) and Violet Basset (b1876 in Laen East, Victoria). John was a Teacher in 1898 when he and Violet married in Laen East. John worked as a Teacher and was posted to Donald, Eddington, Mt Arapiles, Glendaruel and Poowong before retiring to Melbourne.

Vernon worked as a Garage Attendant in Donald in the 1930s and was  a Plate Pattern Worker in Melbourne in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF. Following his Discharge, Vernon returned to Melbourne and was working as a Labourer in 1949 when he married Kathleen Mary Goss (b1921 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Kathleen was a Tobacco Worker and Machinist in Melbourne. Vernon and Kathleen settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Vernon worked as a Labourer and Body Builder before retiring in 1980. Vernon died in 2002 and Kathleen in 2007.
