James Peter Downey was born on October 17, 1869, in Jamestown, South Australia, to a Roman Catholic family. He grew up to become a motor driver and remained single throughout his life.
On July 27, 1915, at the age of 18, Downey enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) to serve in World War I. His regimental number was 3292, and he was assigned to the 10th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement. His next of kin was his father, Patrick Downey, and mother and siblings are unknown.
Downey's military career was marked by bravery and distinction. He was promoted to Lieutenant on December 18, 1918, and served in the 50th Battalion. He was also awarded a Military Medal for bravery in the field.
During his time in France, Downey was wounded on August 13, 1916. Despite this, he continued to serve until the end of the war. He returned to Australia on May 1, 1919.
After the war, Downey lived a long life, passing away on August 29, 1969, at the age of 72. His death was registered under number 3418/1969. He was buried in the Tweed Heads Lawn, General, and Memorial Gardens.
Downey's military service is a testament to his courage and dedication to his country. His legacy lives on through his military records and the honors he received for his service.
