Private William Robert Nairn (Service Nos:V265387/VX109137) initially served in the ACMF as a Private, enlisiting on 8 January 1941 and serving with 37 and 24 Infantry Battalions - graded Driver Mechanic. Private Nairn enlisted in the AIF 'in the field' on 21 September 1942 and was attached to 9 Australian MAC - graded Mechanic. He served in New Guinea (12 August 1943 - 29 July 1944) with 2/33 Australian Transport Platoon and in Borneo (25 May 1945 - 21 November 1945). Private Nairn was attached to 2/43 Australian Transport Platoon at Discharge on 12 December 1945.
Bill was born in Ouyen, Victoria in 1923, eldest of four children of John Nairn (b1890 in Buangor, Victoria) and Hilda Louisa Dorothy Harmer (b1898 in Hopetoun, Victoria). John - a Farmer - had served in the AIF in WWI, and was a Farmer in 1922 when he and Hilda married in Ouyen. They settled in Ouyen, where they raised their family and John was a Farmer until his death in 1929. Hilda was left with four children under seven years of age.
Bill worked in Morwell as a Junior Metal Worker, and had previous garage experience (Machine Shop) when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge, Bill was working as a Fitter's Assistant in Morwell in 1954 when he married his first wife Joy Lorraine McGreevy (b1934 in Melbourne, Victoria) in Melbourne. Bill and Joy settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Bill worked as a Carpenter. Following their divorce in the mid 1960s, Bill settled in Ararat where he was Works Officer and Inspector. In 1983 in Ararat, Bil remarried - Joan Linda Hope (nee Aston; b1929 in Ararat, Victoria). They settled in Ararat, where Bill died in 2004 and Joan in 2006.
