In view of the recent advances the expeditious completion of this road was of the utmost importance, and the only limiting factor was the supply of planking. During Sapper PAINE'S relief an enemy counter attack occurred and the area in which his party was working was heavily shelled. Throughout the shelling however Sapper PAINE set a splendid example to his party which was much shaken and for some time carried on the loading single handed. Sapper PAINE's gallantry so inspired his party that they returned to work and the task was successfully completed. Sapper Paine has frequently displayed great gallantry under fire both in GALLIPOLI and FRANCE."
