Private Gerald John Goode (Service Nos:N394397/NX174858) initially served in the ACMF with 14 Australian Infantry Training Battalion (AITB) - graded Signalman - from 8 July 1942 to 6 August 1943, enlisting the following day in the AIF. Private Goode served in New Guinea with 2/9 Australian Infantry Battalion (23 July 1943 - 29 May 1944), and in Morotai and Balikapan with 2/12 Australian Infantry Battalion (25 May 1945 - 14 March 1946), and was attached to 2/12 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 26 June 1946.
Gerald was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1924, youngest of three children of Bernard Arthur Goode (b1890 in Rockhampton, QLD) and Bridget (Biddy) Eileen O'Connor (b1891 in Brisbane, QLD). Bernard worked at Mt Morgan Gold Mines for three years before moving to Brisbane in 1913 and working as a Journalist on the Daily Mail. Bernard and Biddy married in 1914 in Brisbane, where Bernard joined the Public Service, initially as Shorthand Reporter with the Department of Justice and in 1918 as a Shorthand Reporter with Hansard in Parliament House. In the early 1920s Bernard and Biddy moved their family to Melbourne, where Bernard was a Hansard Reporter. Moving to Canberra in 1930, Bernard worked for thirty years on the Hansard Staff of Federal Parliament.
Gerald joined the Public Service when he finished school, and was a Clerk in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Gerald returned to Canberra, where in 1955 he married Margaret Elaine Whiteford (b1916 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Margaret was a Public Servant in Canberra. Gerald and Margaret settled in Canberra, where Gerald was a Public Servant with the Department of External Affairs until his death in 1975. Margaret worked as a Public Servant in Canberra until retirement, and died in 2005.
