Elder of two brothers (Norman and Alan) who served in WWII, Private Norman Thomas Miller (Service Nos:V68977/VX113587) initially served in the ACMF with 6th Infantry Battalion (16 September 1941 - 22 October 1942) before enlisting 'in the field' in the AIF on 23 October 1942 as a Corporal attached to 6th Infantry Battalion. Promoted to Sergeant on 8 April 1943, he served with NT Force in Darwin (17 September 1943 - 23 February 1944), and then with 2/12 Infantry Battalion in Morotai and Balikapan in 1945. Private Miller was attached to 2/12 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 15 January 1946.

Norman was born in Broadford, Victoria in 1914, fifth of seven children of Walter Alphonsus Miller (b1869 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Annie Ellen Hangan (b1881 in Yea, Victoria). Walter worked as a Teamster in Broadford before he and Annie married in Yea in 1903. The couple settled in Broadford, where they raised their family and Walter worked as a Teamster.

Norman worked as a Labourer in Broadford Paper Mill before enlisting in the Army in 1941. In Melbourne in 1942 he married Pearl Mary Canty (b1921 in Ararat, Victoria). Following his discharge from the Army, Norman and Pearl settled in Broadford, where Norman was a Labourer with the Paper Mill. Norman was a member of the Broadford Football and Tennis Clubs, the Mills Fire Brigade, the Rifle and Small Bore Club, the RSL Broadford Sub Branch and Broadford ROAB Lodge. Norman died in 1955. Pearl later remarried, and died in 2008.
