WALL Bert 269 PTE
22nd Battalion
1892-1916

John Joseph Wall and his wife Martha (Wallace) lived in the Molka district NW of Violet Town.  They raised seven children, the three youngest sons served in WW1. Their mother died in 1898 when Bert, the second youngest, was six years old.

On 22 January 1915 the three men went off to Melbourne to enlist. The first in the queue was 22-year-old Bert; he was allotted service number 269 and drafted into the 22nd Battalion.

In May after preliminary training, he and his brothers embarked on HMAT Ulysses bound for Egypt. Four months of training followed until they embarked for Gallipoli, remaining there  until the evacuation in December.

In March 1916 the battalion embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles for the battalion’s first major action on the Western Front at Pozieres.

On 5 August 1916 Bert was reported as ‘Missing in Action’ – later changed to – ‘Killed in Action’.

Some records state that Bert’s body was never recovered, others that his final resting place was at Gezaincourt, Department de la Somme, Picardie.

Bert’s father received a Memorial Scroll and Plaque as well as Bert’s service medals which were 1914-16 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
