Sergeant Ernest Malcolm Jackson (Service No:NX46007) enlisted in the AIF on 1 July 1940, and marched out to 4th Battalion. Promoted to Sergeant, he was attached to 2/9th Field Regiment on 3 April 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East. Sergeant Jackson served in Palestine, Egypt and Syria before embarking with 2/9th Field Regiment on 10 June 1942 from Suez for Port Adelaide on board SS Empire Scott. Sergent Jackson marched out to 2/9th Infantry Battalion on 16 January 1943, and served at Merauke in Dutch New Guinea in August and September 1945. Sergeant Jackson was attached to 2/9th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 13 December 1945. Younger brother Ray served in the RAAF in WWII.

Tom was born in Adelong, New South Wales in 1913, sixth of seven children of Arthur George Jackson (b1874 in Craigie, New South Wales) and Lily Dale (b1882 in Brighton, Victoria). Arthur (a Labourer) and Lily (a Housekeeper) married in 1902 in Gundagai, and lived in Gundegai, Tumut and Adelong, where they raised their family and Arthur worked as a Labourer and Miner. In the late 1920s the family settled in Fern Valley in Cardiff via Boolaroo, where Arthur was a Miner.

Tom worked in Cardiff as a Labourer, and 1933 in Newcastle married Thora Lillian Sundelius (b1917 in Condobolin, New South Wales). Tom and Thora lived in Cardiff, where Tom was a Labourer before settling in Newcastle in the late 1930s. Tom was a Lineman's Labourer in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge, returned to Newcastle where he and Thora settled and raised their family. Tom worked as a Lineman until his death in 1977. Thora died in 1990.
