Private Tasman Keith Reid (Service No:TX3984) enlisted in the Australian Army on 30 July 1940 and served with 2nd/40th Infantry Battalion. On 8 December 1941 Private Reid embarked from Darwin with 2nd/40th Battalion for Koopang, Timor. On 25 May 1942 he was reported as Missing, and confirmed as a PoW of the Japanese on 15 June 1942. On 20 June 1944 Private Reid was on board the Japanese Transport Tamahoko Maru when it was was torpedoed by submarine USS Tang and sank in the Koshiki Straits. Private Reid was one of 212 (of 772) PoWs who were rescued the following day and taken to Nagasaki - and from there interned at Fukuoka 14 PoW Camp on the island of Kyoga Shima. Private Reid was recovered from the Japanese on 30 September 1945 and emplaned from Manila for Darwin on 12 October 1945. He was Discharged on 19 March 1946.
Born in 1903 in Launceston Tasmania, Tasman was the seventh of nine children of Charles William Sydney Reid (b1870 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Edith Elsie Wright (aka Ada; b1867 in Launceston, Tasmania). Charles and Edith married in 1891 in Launceston and settled at Newnham where Charles was a Farmer.
Tasman worked as a Labourer in Newnham and in 1924 married Winifred Louise Shepherd (b1903 in Launceston, Tasmania). Tasman and Winifred were living in Rocherlea where Tasman was a Lorry Driver when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Tasman and Winifred were Divorced in 1948 and Tasman settled in Newnham where he worked as a Labourer. In 1970, Tasman remarried to Norma Lutwyche (b1901 in Malthinna, Tasmania) - Norma worked as a Nurse. Tasman and Norma lived at Sandy Bay until Tasman's death in 1975. Norma died in 1982 at Scottsdale.
