Stanley Newman was born on the 5th of June 1923 in Alexandra, Victoria. He was working as a Plastic Moulder when he joined the CMF on the 23rd of July 1941. He was allocated service number V17808 and was taken on strength with the 6th Supply Reinforcements.
Stanley transferred to the 2nd A.I.F on the 20th of July 1942 and was re-allocated service number VX85903. On the 23rd of September 1942 he transferred from the 34th Training Battalion to the Independent Company and then to the Jungle Warfare Centre at Watsonia. On the 4th of February 1943 he embarked from Cairns and disembarked at Port Moresby on the 7th of February 1943.
On the 14th of February 1943 Stanley was taken on strength with the 2/7th Infantry Battalion, where he served until, he returned with the Battalion to Australia on the 7th of October 1943. (During this time the 2/7th was involved in the drive towards Salamaua). In December 1943 Stanley was evacuated to hospital suffering from Malaria which continued to affect him throughout 1944.
Stanley returned to New Guinea with the 2/7th Battalion in November 1944 and was involved in the clearing of the Torricelli and Prince Alexander Ranges. Still suffering from Malaria, he returned to Australia on the 24th of October 1945 and was discharged on the 30th of May 1946.
