Story of William John (aka John William) Holloway
William, known as "Johnny", born in Warrnambool VC, on 28 Jul 1923, the son of Keith Henry Holloway & Mabel Alida Pulham, enlisted in the CMF (S/N: V170186) at Royal Park in Melbourne on 17 Dec 1941 at the age of 18y 4m
He was allocated to the 6th Battalion as a Private, part of the 2nd Inf Brigade
Through 1941 to 1945, Johnny was attached for duty with Brigade Headquarters, conducting training & undertook garrison duties in NSW, WA, NT & VIC
Ater a period of training at the Jungle Warfare Centre in Canungra, Johnny embarked for New Guinea on 22 Apr, arriving at Torokina, Bougainville on the 28th
Johnny posted to the 57th/60th Battalion, who had been in-country since Jan & following the fighting around Slaters Knoll, were now advancing along the axis of the Buin Road to the Hongorai River, then on to the Hari & Mobiai Rivers, where they would take part in the "Battle of the Hongorai River"
After they were relieved by the 29th Brigade in Jul, Johnny was detached o the LHQ School of "Mech" until Oct, when he was posted to the 37th/52nd Battalion in New Britain who were used to guard Japanese POWs while restoring law & order in the region
Johnny returned to Australia on 7 Jan & was demobilised by the 30th
On 2 Nov 1949, Johnny who was now a 26yo Presser at Cough Dry Cleaners, enlisted for service in the RAAF (S/N : 173430 & A33524) & following his initial training to become a Steward, was posted to Point Cook Base Squadron on 31 Mar 1951
From Mar 1951 to Aug 1961, Johnny served a various locations including RAAF Bases Laverton, Darwin, Tottenham, Point Cook & Butterworth, as well as No.6 RAAF Hospital
He deployed on operations to Japan & Korea; 6 Mar-20 Jul 1953 & to Malaya during the Malayan Emergency with No.2 Airfield Construction Squadron; 4 Sep 1955-16 Jun 1958
Johnny was reported as "seriously ill" on 2 May 1961 & was discharged med unfit by 9 Aug
Johnny passed away in Warrnambool on 20 Jun 1989 at age 65y 10m & is buried at Warrnambool Cemetery, Plot: CEA 24 025
For his service through WW2, Japan, Korea & Malaya, he was awarded the1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Australia Service Medal, UN Medal [KOREA], 1945-75 Australian Active Service Medal [MALAYA], 1918-16 General Service Medal [MALAYA], 1945-75 Australian Service Medal [PNG] [JAPAN] [KOREA], Australian Defence Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal & Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal.
