Ella was the second of six children of Arthur Patrick Smith (b1892 in Emu Bay, Tasmania) and Ruby Rose Barker (b1895 in Ulverstone, Tasmania). Arthur (a Labourer) had travelled to Western Australia with two of his brothers and enlisted in the AIF in 1916 (Private; Service No:6348) - he was a German PoW (1917/1918) captured in France and held in Limberg, Germany. Arthur was a Farmer in Montumana, Tasmania in 1922 when he and Ruby married. They settled in the region and raised their family.

Ella was a Waitress at the Rocky Cafe in Burnie, Tasmania in June 1943 when she enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service (Private; Service No:TF150488). She was attached to 2 AWAS Barracks (Indooroopilly, Brisbane, QLD) when she was Discharged in June 1946.

Following her Discharge, Ella married Frank Victor Lee (b1926 in Katoomba, NSW) - Frank was a Soldier. The couple settled in Sydney, NSW and by the late 1950s Frank had taken his Discharge and was working as a Section Manager. Ella and Frank remained in Sydney, NSW where Ella died in 1998 and Frank in 2002.
