Alfred Johnson enlisted at the same time as his brother 2192 Pte. Harmond Henry Johnson and they had consecutive regimental numbers in the 49th Battalion. Harmond was killed in action at Messines, Belgium during June 1917. Alfred served mainly with the 25th Battalion and was twice wounded during the course of the war. He married an English girl, Mamie Collins on 29 August 1918, and she returned to Australia with him during July 1919.
Another brother Charles Johnson was three times wounded and sent home to Australia during late 1918.
They were the sons of Horatio Edward Johnson, of Tweed River NSW, their mother Sarah had passed away during 1908.
