Family History
Hulbert George Mathison in Araluen in 1891. He was the first surviving child of James and Rebecca Mathison and one of nine children (below). All of the children were born in Araluen.
• William J 1890,
• Hulbert G 1891,
• Edward A 1893,
• Isabella A 1896,
• Robert F 1899,
• Stella I 1901,
• Juanita C 1904,
• Dorothy A 1907, and
• Allan J 1910.
His father was born James Edward Matheson in Sydney in 1862. James (Jnr) was the first child to James and Katherine/Catherine Matheson. Sometime after his birth, his parents moved the family to Araluen so his father could take up mining. The Electoral roles of 1870 and 1878 describe James and Katherine living in Araluen at Bald Hill and Benmenang Creek.
His mother was born Rebecca Ann Tuttlebee in Araluen in 1866. She was the 5th child of William and Ann Tuttlebee. Rebecca's parents emigrated to Australia, met and married whilst in Araluen. In 1888, at the age of 22, Rebecca married James Edward Matheson.
