Youngest of three brothers who served in WWII, Private Frank Mcdonald Whitehead (Service No:14763) enlisted in the AIF on 2 July 1941 and was posted to 1st and 3rd Training Battalions, and in 1944 to 2/10 Armoured Regiment. In 1945 Private Whitehead was posted to 1 Australian Cavaly Commando Training Squadron, and embarked with 63rd Infantry Squadron on 10 June 1945 from Brisbane for Morotai on board SS Both. Private Whitehead served with 63rd Infantry Battalion in Morotai and Amboina (Amforce), and on 2 January 1946 emplaned from Morotai for Perth. Private Whitehead was attached to 63rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 13 March 1946.
Frank was born in Kellerberrin, Western Australia in 1922, fifth of six children (and youngest of five sons) of William Henry Whitehead (b1879 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Edith Lillian Hitchin (b1882 in Gladstone, South Australia). In 1909 William was a Confectioner in Perth, where he and Edith married - and settled at Nangeenan via Merredin, where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. William and Edith remained in the Merredin District, living at Hine Hill and Belka, where William was a Farmer. Following Edith's death in 1940, William remarried and lived briefly in South Australia with his second wife Gertrude, before returning to Western Australia in 1949.
Frank was working in Merredin as a Clerk when he enlisted in the AIF in 1941. Following his Discharge, he met Patricia Eileen Maccabbe (nee Bourke; b1925 in Perth, Western Australia) - Patricia was working at The Three Springs Hotel. Frank and Patricia married in 1951, and settled in Burracoppin via Merredin, where they raised their family until Frank's death in 1957.
