Craftsman Samuel Charles Hovey (Service No:VX122327) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V215110) from 26 September 1941 to 31 December 1942. Craftsman Hovey enlisted in the AIF on 1 January 1943 (graded Fitter) and served with 1 Australian Tank Workshop AEME. In February 1944 he transferred to 2/1 Base Workshop (graded Turner) and was Discharged on 23 July 1945. He re-enlisted until the late 1950s.

Sam was born in Maryborough, Victoria in 1921, eldest of six children of Samuel James Hovey (b1902 in Creswick via Ballarat, Victoria) and Robina Ada Gladys Bartlett (b1896 in Maryborough, Victoria). Samuel Snr (a Miner) and Robina married in Maryborough in 1921 and lived there and in St Arnaud where Samuel Snr was a Railways Employee before settling in Melbourne in the early 1940s.

Sam was working in Parkdale, Melbourne as a Drum Machinist and Presshead when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1940. In 1942 in Melbourne he married Gladys Norma Collings (b1921 in Bentleigh, Victoria). Sam and Beryl lived in Stanthorpe and Cairns, QLD and Melbourne while Sam was in the Army. Discharging in the late 1950s, Sam amd Beryl settled in Shepparton, Victoria where Sam was a Garage Proprietor. Following their Divorce in the late 1960s, Sam remarried in 1971 to Margaret Atwell (b1923 in Port Pirie, South Australia) - Margaret was a Nurse in Adelaide and was at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in 1968. Sam and Margaret settled in Shepparton where Sam worked as a Plumber. Sam died in 1995 and Margaret in 2016.
