Private Frederick George Charles Smith (Service No:W3280) initially served in the RAN Reserve before enlisting in the ACMF on 24 June 1942. Private Smith was attached to 4 Battalion (Bunbury) VDC at Discharge on 5 August 1944.

Fred was born in Cottesloe in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1907, eldest of two children of Ernest Frederick Smith (b1874 in Daylesford, Victoria) and Maria Regina Finch (b1872 in Smeaton, Victoria). Ernest was a Striker with the WAGR in 1896, and he and Maria married in Fremantle in 1902. Ernest and Maria lived in Fremantle and Cottesloe, where they raised their family and Ernest was a Blacksmith. 

Fred studied Dentistry at The University of Western Australia and in 1936 in Perth, married Norma (Poppy) Erica Smith (b1912 in Donnybrook, Western Australia). Fred and Poppy settled in Collie, where  they raised their family and Fred was a Dentist. In 1941 Fred lost his right eye as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Following Fred's death in 1975, Poppy moved to Bunbury where she died in 2004.
