Private Charles Alexander Burkett (Service No:T23394) initially served in the AIF (Lance Corporal; Service No:TX3063) with 7 Salvage Unit in the Middle East (26 October 1940 to 16 April 1941) and was hospitalised in Gaza with a septic ulcer before being evacuated to Australia, where he was again hospitalised and Discharged as Medically Unfit. Private Burkett then served in the ACMF (15 December 1941 - 28 January 1942) with 4 Battalion VDC.

Charlie was born in Currie, King Island, Tasmania in 1907, fourth of five children of Patrick (Pat) Burkett (b1877 at Emerald Hill, Victoria) and Amelia (Millie) Catherine Turner (b1879 in Rosedale, Tasmania). Pat was a Cabinet Maker in 1900 when he and Millie married in Melbourne. By 1911 they had settled in Currie on King Island, Tasmania where Pat was a Grazier, Labourer and Fruiterer. In 1916 Pat and Millie were living in Melbourne, where Pat worked as a Packer and Driver and served in the AIF in 1918/1919 (Private; Service Nos:1218/6518). Through the 1920s Pat worked at Brown Coal Mine in Moe as a Cook and Carpenter before returning to King Island in the early 1930s.

Charlie worked in Currie, King Island as a Casual Labourer and in 1937 married Iris (Sis) Mary French (b1916 in Burnie, TAsmania). Following his Discharge, Charlie and Sis settled in Currie where they raised their family and Charlie worked as a Labourer and Share Farmer (Dairy), and was nominated on several occasions for Local Council.
