Arch was the third child (and only son) of John William Greaves (b1870 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Lillian Wooster (b1869 in Ballarat, Victoria). John and Lillian married in 1893 in Ballarat, Victoria and had moved to Sydney NSW by 1898. John (a Labourer) and Lillian moved to Western Australia in 1904 and lived in Wongan Hills, Merredin and Perth. Lillian was an accomplished Poet, published in Australia and New Zealand, and a member of The Women's Writers Club and honorary representative of the Institute of British Poetry in Western Australia.

Arch had worked as a Farm Laboroer in Wongan Hills before enlisting in the AIF in 1917 (Private; Service No:7059). He was an Income Tax Assessor in Perth WA when he married Helen Louise Hegarty (b1912 in Northam, WA) in 1936 in Perth. Arch and Helen settled in Perth where Arch worked as an Income Tax Assessor/Clerk. In 1941 he enlisted in the ACMF, serving with 2 Battalion VDC (Service No:W48119). Arch died in 1972 and Helen in 2010.
