Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

104 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 22nd October 1919, Driver Herbert John Devereux, referred to as Herb or Harry or Jock, 35th Battalion (Reg No-54), jockey from 39 Brunker Road, Hamilton West, New South Wales and Victoria Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., was laid to rest with a military funeral at Sandgate Cemetery, age 30. ANGLICAN 1-72. 51.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 14th July 1889 to Harry (Henry, died 10.11.1916, Hamilton, N.S.W., ANGLICAN 1-62. 25) and Mary Devereux (died 25.4.1919, Adamstown, N.S.W., ANGLICAN 1-62. 25) of Hannell Street, Wickham, New South Wales and Victoria Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., Herb enlisted on the 22nd November 1915 at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (shell shock - neurasthenia, Battle of Messines).

WOUNDED, Private Herbert J. Devereux (Wickham).
Admitted to hospital 14.11.1916 (stomatitis), 4.1.1919 (bronchopneumonia, mild).

Returned to Australia 2.3.1919.

Demobilisation form states early return to Australia for business reasons.

Herb returned home on the 17th April 1919, being discharged on the 9th June 1919.

Mr. Devereux’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

The tragic circumstances of Herb’s death were reported at the inquest which determined death caused by being crushed between two coal wagons.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
