Johannes left Adelaide with his brother Gustav on the Ballarat on 12 August 1916 and arrived in Devonport on 30 September. He went to France from Folkestone with his unit on 30 December. Johannes was gassed and suffered shrapnel wounds in action on 2 June 1918 and was evacuated to Kitchener Military Hospital at Brighton, England for treatment the next day. He was able to leave hospital on 9 June and return to his unit. Johannes returned to Australia on the Wahehe on 31 March 1920 and
was discharged on 10 July.

GERHARDY, Johannes Arthur was born on the 26th of January 1892 in Lobethal South Australia. Before Arthur enlisted he worked as a labourer.

Johannes enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force on the 27th of April 1916 at Adelaide, South Australia. He served in the 32nd Infantry Battalion as a Private. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 12th of August 1916.  Johannes fought on the Western Front.

After the war Johannes returned home to Australia arriving 18th May 1920. He was discharged from the Australian Imperial forces on the 10th of July 1920. Johannes lived until 1961 when he died from natural causes on the 22nd of September.
