Private John William Hirth (Service Nos:V112724/V401018) served in the ACMF with 8th Battalion VDC from 21 March 1941 to 20 September 1942, having been released following Training Camp in 1941 for work in the Timber Industry.

John was born in Portland, Victoria in  1914, eldest of two children of William (Willie) Arthur Hirth (b1881 in Mount Gambier, South Australia) and Frances (Fanny) Hoskins (b1895 in Dartmoor, Victoria). Willie was a Farmer in Mt Gambier before moving to Dartmoor where he was a Labourer when he and Fanny married in 1914. They settled in Dartmoor where they raised their family and Willie worked as a Labourer and Gardener.

John worked as a Labourer in Dartmoor, and was a Timber Worker when he enlisted in the ACMF. John remained in Dartmoor and worked as a Labourer until his death in 1965.
