Add my storyBiography
James was the youngest son of the Rev James Stewart (and Margaret) who was a very outspoken and well known church leader of the Presbyterian Church.
Rev Stewart helped to found the Brisbane City Mission in Fortitude Valley which eventually grew to become Mission Australia and was the minister of the Fortitude Valley Presbyterian Church.
James Crichton Stewart was my grandfather Edmund Stewart Mellor's 1st cousin.
At least 6 of James' cousins fought at Gallipoli and France (including my great uncle) so there was a strong sense of family duty to 'do their bit'.
James worked as a clerk in Brisbane looking after his mother after the death of his father, Rev James, in 1907, and never married.
His Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 14 June 1917. He was 36 when he was killed.
