Robert lived his early life in North Perth where the family resided, where he attended the local schools and went on to gain an electrical trade. In his twenties Robert moved to Gwalia (near Leonora), in the northern goldfields north of Kalgoorlie, where he worked at his trade and where he met and married his wife in 1937.
Robert and his wife continued to work and live through the late 1930's early 1940's in Gwalia where he worked as an electrician at the Gwalia gold mine and where he also operated the Federal Theatre at Gwalia (Gwalia Co Op Pictures).
